What you must know about Water Damage

The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation has said that about 30,000 Canadian homes are damaged by water each and every year.  The cost to repair all the damage is estimated at about $140 million!

According to the Insurance Bureau of Canada, water damage is the single greatest cause of home insurance claims.  That means more than theft, fire or other weather-related damage.

Damage to your home and belongings

  • Foundation problems:  Proper drainage around the foundation is important.  Over time, water that is slowly seeping and leaking into your home’s foundation could cause a lot of damage.  Landscaping that isn’t properly graded away from the house can cause slower but costly damage.
  • Leaky Roof: Buildup of ice and snow, whether over the course of the winter or after a big storm, can do major harm to the roof.
  • Loss of personal items:  Valuable papers and records, cherished family photos, your wedding dress – all of these items are irreplaceable.  Losing them would be devastating.
  • Damage to household items: Your carpets, furniture, and electronic items – to name a few – can all be damaged by water.

Damage to your Health

Water slowly seeping into your home can create an ideal growing environment for mould and bacteria; they thrive in damp places.  Breathing in these can make you and your family cough and sneeze, give you headaches, or even worse.
