Identity Theft….it could happen to you!

In the past year over 11,000 Canadians fell victim to identity theft.  Even though it may take a thief only a short time to assume your identity, it can take months and longer to restore your good name.

Identity theft refers to all types of crime where someone steals your identity by using your credit cards, driver licence, social insurance number, etc. to commit fraud or other criminal activity.  This can occur many ways including

  • Stolen wallet or purse
  • Preapproved credit application stolen from your mailbox
  • Thieves look over your shoulder when PIN is entered
  • Thieves rifle through trash bins for personal information
  • Sent email that appears to come from a reputable company that requests personal data

With your identity, the thief can obtain credit cards, new bank accounts, loans to buy a car, obtain benefits and even transfer title to your home.

The consequences of identity theft are many.  You may be harassed by creditors, have your credit rating damaged, spend considerable time and effort to clear your name.  You can also experience difficulties with banks and insurance companies.  Above all, you also feel emotionally violated and vulnerable.

This is why you need to make sure you have identity theft insurance.  This can be added to most home insurance policies.  Talk to a representative at our office about this, or call us at 204-452-4913.
